9. Flashbacks With Ellie And Abby
Players were fully onboard with Ellie’s plans for revenge as she decides to hunt down Abby and her crew. Her journey takes her into the city of Seattle, which is now the backdrop of a war between The Scars and the Washington Liberation Front, all while swarms of infected occupy the abandoned buildings.
But in between Ellie’s various acts of vengeance, the player gets to learn more about Ellie and Abby’s past in the form of flashbacks. It’s here that players were pleasantly surprised to see Joel and Ellie reunited and interacting in some of the best written parts of the game, while also getting new information about Abby, her life before joining the WLF and why she was so determined to hunt down Joel.
However, the flashbacks had mixed results with players. On the one hand, some say it's nice to see Ellie and Joel together again. However, others say these scenes disrespect Joel as a character by reducing him to nothing more than a means to emotionally manipulate the player.
As for Abby’s flashbacks, some argue they are a failed attempt to make the player feel sorry for a character they spend half of the game hating.
