You can pet the dogs and spare the vast majority, but you will have to kill one of them.

When Naughty Dog released a few new gameplay trailers of The Last Of Us Part 2, players were able to check out some of the new features in the game. Additions such as explosive arrows, the ability to crawl under cover and a dedicated dodge and jump button were met with excitement by most gamers.

But although the inclusion of dogs as a new enemy type made sense in terms of gameplay and looked to provide players with a new challenge to overcome, some were a bit squeamish at the thought of having to kill them. Fortunately, Neil Druckmann assured fans that you would not be required to kill any dogs and that if you were careful you could avoid them altogether.

Sadly, like the misleading marketing, this too was a clever ruse by Naughty Dog. When Ellie breaks into the aquarium in search of Abby, she is attacked by Owen and Mel’s dog, Alice, and must kill the dog in a quick time event in order to progress the story.

So much for man's best friend.
