4. Ellie Loses Two Fingers
After travelling to Santa Barbara, Ellie learns Abby and Lev have been captured by a hostile group. Upon freeing an exhausted Abby and Lev, Ellie gets the chance to fight Abby again.
In the fight, Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers, before Ellie tackles her and begins to drown her. But as she is about to kill Abby, she lets her go and sits by herself in a distressed state as Abby and Lev sail off into the midnight fog.
It's a depressing ending that only gets more so when we learn that she can no longer play the guitar that Joel taught her to use, and she is now facing her biggest fear: Being alone.
This has players divided for a number of good reasons.
Some argue that the ending fits the game's message of pursuing revenge undoing everything; that Ellie was always going to bring more misery for herself and those she loved. Others will argue that to end a revenge story with no revenge at all, and only serves to end on a downer.
