In keeping with Ellie taking on Joel's personality traits, another Joel characteristic we see in Ellie through the gameplay is her being just as tough as Joel in combat.

But perhaps she may be becoming just a bit too much like Joel.

If the aforementioned death of Dina really does happen, she would have lost a loved one, just like Joel. For Joel, losing a loved one is what made him close his heart to the world and become the man who had 'few moral lines left to cross', so it stands to reason Ellie will go through the same emotional downfall Joel went on.

Not to mention, she even takes on Joel's gruffness in combat. We hear her coldly say "Come here" when she takes a human shield.

In short, Ellie is becoming how Joel was. So perhaps, story-wise, Joel will know what she is going through, but will be powerless to help. He will understand her pain, but she won't want his comfort because of his lie.

Thanks to this new trailer, we can now, to an extent, understand the meaning behind the words Joel spoke in the first trailer. "Are you really gonna go through with this?"
