The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild: 12 Critical Reactions You Need To Know

8. Storytelling Is Its Major Weakness

"If Breath of the Wild has one weakness, it's as a story. The grand events of the past seem remote from the teeming world around you...It doesn't have the memorable characters and simple, pure narrative purpose of The Wind Waker...It's a shame - but it doesn't need these things." - Eurogamer
"As usual in Zelda the story is very minimal. But it begins with Link waking from a century-long sleep and takes a surprisingly maudlin tone during the occasional cut scenes." - Metro

Though Breath of the Wild takes a more cinematic approach to its storytelling than previous games, the plot is still largely minuscule, and the game is instead driven forward by its outstanding gameplay above all else.

You'd be foolish to expect a particularly deep or nuanced plot from a series that has basically re-trod its core narrative beats countless times, but perhaps some were hoping for a little more than this, and might be left a underwhelmed in this regard.
