The Outer Worlds: 10 Ways It's Already Better That Fallout 4
9. World Design
Owing to the stricter sense of control that comes with not relying on a huge, singular map to impress gamers, the environments of The Outer Worlds we have seen so far feel far more impressive than Fallout 4's Commonwealth.
A clear example of the love that's gone into designing the world is the recent PAX East footage which showed off the huge city state Byzantium (pictured above). The dev team talk briefly about the visual aspects of the city and how its grandiose appearance falls apart if you look too carefully, with buildings showing wear and tear and the facade of pre-fab buildings not standing up to the ravages of deep space.
A relatively recent GameInformer podcast had two of the developers explain that nothing has been procedurally generated even though the technology was discussed at an early stage of development. This means that every in-game asset has been designed with purpose in mind, designed to enrich The Outer Worlds even if it's the smallest details. If that doesn't make for a more exciting world to uncover, I don't know what will.
