The Sinking City Review - The Year's Best Horror Game?

1. Conclusion

The Sinking City
Frogwares

The negatives are there, but The Sinking City has such a fantastically bizarre world and so many intricate, weird stories that they're forgivable in the grand scheme of things, and noticed far more keenly in the side quests than through the main cases. Overall, the game is a real treat to explore, and relishes in its creepy, atmospheric, and dark subject matter to excellent effect, bringing to life H. P. Lovecraft's otherworldly sense of horror in a tangible and engaging way. The Sinking City is a game that draws you deeper and deeper into its mysteries, no matter how repulsive they might be, and more than makes up for any shortcomings through narrative compulsion alone. There's some serious lore, and love, that has gone into crafting this world.

The strength of Lovecraft is in his ability to tell a story after all, and that's evident with Frogwares achievement with this title. The Sinking City is sometimes over-ambitious, but for a game that equates to what can only be described as an AAA indie title - it still manages to deliver in horrifying abundance. If you want a game that will disgust you, fascinate you, and scare you in equal measure as you dig into the core of it, then The Sinking City is a very exciting title to get your hands on. At the very least - you won't be looking at the ocean in the same way any time soon.

Kay be with you, newcomers.
