Even though that was a satisfying end to the story of Sera, the fight would eventually return in the form of an old enemy, but under a new name.

25 years had passed since the Lambent, and the Locust were defeated in one fell swoop. In their place, the Swarm awoke.

The crystalised shells they were encased in acted as a pod for them to evolve and grow stronger - much like the transformation from a caterpillar to a butterfly. The Swarm woke in the many disused mines of Sera as that was the best solution the COG had when it came to disposing of them. It was just too hard to destroy them.

Similar to the Lambent, but on a smaller scale, they would collect humans and convert their matter into new creatures for the Swarm effort. Thanks in part to the Snatcher, once a human was caught and placed into a pod, it was pretty much game over. Apart from Marcus Fenix, of course, who escaped thanks to the help of his son, JD.

Unlike the Locust, this new threat was out for blood and wanted control of the planet. They would trample the humans and even take control of the COG DeeBees, which were created by Damon Baird to help with construction, though like everything in Gears, they were eventually used for warfare.

The war didn't fully kick off till Kait Diaz, daughter of Reyna, found her mother attached up to the Swarm. She would unhook her, though Reyna was thought to be dead. Instead, both were part of the Hivemind of the Swarm, and things were just getting started all over again.
