The Witcher 3: 10 Things You Didn't Know
From Geralt's growing beard to Dandelion's darkest secrets, get ready for a heap of Witcher 3 facts.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is widely regarded as the best game in the Witcher series, and is universally acclaimed as one of the best video games of all time. At the time of its release alone, the game received over 250 Game of the Year titles, and has earned many other nominations and awards since. For good reason, too!
The story is captivating, the gameplay is superlative, and The Witcher 3’s attention to detail is well-known for being second to none. As you progress, you may notice Geralt’s real-time beard growth adding to the immersion, but there are plenty of real-world references — such as a sword called Longclaw being a direct reference to Game of Thrones’ character Jon Snow — that make you feel right at home while playing.
Many of these little tidbits are rather noticeable, while others are hidden deep in the gameplay and lore, and can be much more difficult to come across. As such, we’ve curated a list: here are some Witcher 3 facts to sink your teeth into that you might not have known before.
10. The Characters' True Ages
Kicking this list off is a fact for the ages. No, literally. Given the physical appearance of many of the characters, we might guess at first glance that they are a very different age from what they actually are.
Geralt’s faithful friend Dandelion is a man of many talents; he is a bard, a poet, a minstrel, and… middle-aged? Hold onto your lutes, because during the events of The Witcher 3, Dandelion is aged around his late forties. This is in stark contrast to his spritely appearance and youthful, boisterous personality. We have to wonder whether Dandelion acts the way he does in an attempt to mask his age (maintaining his vanity in true bardic fashion), or whether it is merely a consequence of his personality.
He isn’t the only one looking good for his age; during the events of Wild Hunt, Geralt reveals that he is reaching around 100 years old. Similarly, Yennefer is also nearing 100, being born around 1174 while The Witcher 3 begins in 1272. It is understandable that these two look so fresh-faced, what with Witchers and Sorceresses ageing differently from regular humans, but… Dandelion? Share your skincare routine, fella.
