These Gaming Mechanics Suck! AGAIN!
3. First Place Priority - Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed
Sometimes mechanics in a video game aren't there solely for your enjoyment - they're there to make the experience fairer for all involved, thus making a more competitive scene and one you're more likely to return to no matter your skill level.
However, as tripping proved, you can indeed go a little too far off course in the balance department, or as in the case of Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed you can tell the balance to absolutely do one.
In kart racing games there are usually measures taken to make sure the gap between first and last place is as small as possible, and thanks to rubber banding which affords players lower down the rungs a speed and handling boost to get them back in the game, or an assortment of more powerful items to clear a path, you're always left with a chaotic and competitive affair.
However for some unknown reason, Sonic Transformed decided to do away with the idea that those in first place shouldn't get access to those super-powered weapons, because here you can rack up missiles and traps that basically cement you in pole position! Hell you could even get speed boosts meaning you could flip the bird and scream off into the sunset cackling like a madman.
A choice was made in this game, and that was to teach players in second place and below that, if you're anything less than the best, then you're just dead last.
