These Gaming Mechanics Suck! AGAIN!

These Mechanics Suck
Telltale

The Unskippable Cutscene.

Even saying its name aloud feels like it's conjuring some sort of infernal devil spawn, and truly the concept of a lengthy scripted scene that you can't skip through must be the work of Lucifer himself. We all enjoy taking a break from time to time to let the action speak for itself, but for some reason so many titles seem to turn what should be an enjoyable experience into something akin to having someone pour acid into your crotch.

Whether placed before a horrendous boss that will kick your ass harder than the job market after leaving school, or being laced with Quick-Time events that will insta-fail you right back to the beginning or simply letting Hideo Kojima direct them so that each is an hour-long, cutscenes can be weaponized by developers into aggravating wastes of time.

I totally understand that developers might not want audiences to miss out on important plot points and so not being able to skip on first viewing is more than acceptable, but not offering repeated screenings a bypass is borderline criminal.

It's bad enough that the boss after this moment has taken its weapon and turned me into a human shish kebab, don't let this ten-minute cutscene be the salt to my many many wounds!

Jules Gill hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
