Tomb Raider: Ranking Every Game Worst To Best
10. Tomb Raider Underworld
Underworld can be viewed as the last real entry into the original Tomb Raider canon, as the game marked a time of transition for gaming's most beloved heroine - becoming multi-platform and intergenerational - it's a game that feels like it should belong in her Golden age, but instead it's a middle child that's mostly forgotten about.
The gameplay doesn't do anything exactly new, it's absolutely fine and inoffensive for what it is, but that may in essence be Underworld's biggest problem. The fact that there's no real talking points really skewed the outcome of the critical and commercial reception of this title and, more than anything, it seems like people were just becoming flat out bored by her seemingly exploitative exploits.
As mentioned before, the classic gameplay of everything that made fans fall in love with her in the first place is present and accounted for. There's a continuation of the story from the prior entry (Legend), and despite being a little more linear in parts, the game still gives you a healthy amount of exploration. It's technically fine, but ultimately too innocuous to make an impression.
It's digestible, but its ultimately the sort of experience you'd get with the recent movie of the same franchise. You're not encapsulated, you just kind of go through the motions, and once it's all over, your mind immediately relinquishes the memory of it.
It's clear that a reboot was imminent for the stagnating franchise at this point.
