Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: Every Game Ranked Worst To Best
5. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Even if the gameplay in THPS 4 wasn’t up to par with the rest of its predecessors, this game would still feature this high based on expansion and soundtrack alone. The latter is easily the best in the series by a country mile and the former is still perhaps the closest we’ve seen in terms of a bigger, better scope in the series, a fifth of a century later.
After the series had seen unprecedented success - absolutely dominating the late 90s and early 2000s - it seemed like everything that could’ve been done had been done. Underground may have changed the format, but Pro Skater 4 took everything that worked from the earlier games and expanded on them to resounding acclaim across the board.
One new feature which would shape the successive games included the accumulation of money. A new method for unlocking skaters that increased the replay value substantially.
The more immersive form of gaining missions from pro skaters - as opposed to being given them from the outset - also utilised a series first in voice acting. But, the most influential of additions is the revelation of the spine transfer, a move which improved the flow and maneuverability of the game drastically.
It only really loses some points for throwing new players in at the deep end with an unexpectedly difficult opening level, and its lacklustre, uninspired guest characters.
Jango Fett? Not Boba? Really?
