9. Innocence Lost
One of Skyrims moodiest quests is undoubtedly the introduction to the Dark Brotherhood, Tamriels ever present guild of assassins. You first hear rumours of a child named
Aventus Arentino in Windhelm whos attempting in vain to summon the Dark Brotherhood. When you find the child, hes chanting the Black Sacrament the ritual to summon the assassins worryingly over a skeletal corpse. Because Skyrim doesnt have a child services, its up to you to grant his request; namely to kill the cruel matron of the Orphanage that Aventus belongs to in Riften. This quest is so macabre because your main objective is to essentially snuff out the life of a helpless old woman; she may have been a mean old hag, but did she really deserve death? The answer to this question is invariably the answer to whether or not you belong in the Dark Brotherhood. Its a clever little notion, thats even more pointedly levelled at the taking of an innocent life than any of the previous Elder Scrolls titles.
