Uncharted 4: 9 Annoying Things That Stop It Being Perfect
3. Nate Can't Take Enough Damage
From day one, Naughty Dog have struggled perfecting Uncharted's combat. Initially more of a cover shooter in the vein of Gears of War, Uncharted 2 and 3 injected way more verticality to proceedings, encouraging you to stay on the move, gain the high ground, leaping around enemies to get the drop on them.
However, for the sake of encouraging this speedy and pacy gameplay, Nate can take only a handful of bullets before going down. Enemies will pop off shots from across the map no matter what too, meaning if you happen to roll or jump into the wrong area, you're gunned down in seconds.
Part of the appeal of Uncharted comes in fulfilling this escapist fantasy dream of being an athletic, bullet-dodging explorer, pulling off all sorts of superheroic feats and returning with the bruises and marks to show for it, and because Naughty Dog set this feeling up so !*$% well, it's only eminently more soul-destroying when things don't come together.
A particular late-game stage wants you to leap to the rescue and save Sam from an onslaught of pirates, but you'll do most of the fight in black and white, as laser-focussed enemies sear you to ribbons whenever you step out of cover.
There's a big disconnect between the Nathan Drake we talk about and the Nathan Drake we play, as the latter is nowhere near as dependable as his own legend would have you believe.
