Ups & Downs From Star Trek: Voyager - Across The Unknown

6. Up: Upskilling the Workforce

Research is not to be forgotten.

While everything on the surface looks golden with Tuvok assigned to the shield generators and B'Elanna down in Main Engineering, there is still work to be done. Collecting resources is just one aspect of ship management because if players don't research key systems and features, then everything will go a bit stale and possibly halt their attempt to make it back to the Alpha Quadrant.

However, it is a balance of resources against leaps of faith or calculated risks as to which paths to explore and develop first. Do you satisfy crew needs and research better quarters, or choose to strengthen defences against the possible threats of the Delta Quadrant? Might players want to bolster Engineering facilities to help speed up the journey? All of these decisions are a click away as long as there are the resources are available. If not, then it's time to scavenge a planet, ship or asteroid field to advance. For those fancying something a little more spicy in their development, never fear, because there's some Borg tech to unlock the further Across the Unknown you go.

It's easy to get carried away and want to research everything, so pace it out and only spend those valuable resources when the occasion calls for it. That dilithium might be needed elsewhere before the sector is out.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
