Warhammer 40K Kill Team: Arena Review
If this isn’t your style you can turn to the Ultima rules which randomize everything meaning that it’s down to your own skill, knowledge of your Kill Team roster and a healthy dose of luck. It’s great to see Games Workshop leaning on 2 styles of play which actively represent what fans have asked for. This coupled with the refined rules that allow greater flexibility of play, such as the delayed overwatch tactic which can allow shotgun wielders to capitalize on a strength buff they get at shorter ranges, means that Kill Team: Arena is a consolidation and refinement in all the right areas for regular players, and a fresh new experience for those wanting to try tournaments.
In terms of critique there are still a few points of concern; Xenos players might find it hard to team up with battle brothers because very few share the keywords they need, plus while the included content in the box is sizable it would have been nice to receive some counters, data cards and tokens as the rules simply state “use your own”. This extra bit of value would have been nice for players who didn’t invest in the stand alone Kill Team squad boxes.
However you cannot deny that for the scenery, the boards, the revamped rules and the support that Kill Team: Arena provides for competitive players, that there’s not a great deal of value in this expansion. Therefore with this in mind we give Kill Team: Arena ⅘
It’s a great step forward for the game in terms of support, but possibly not the essential counterpart you need for your matches. However if you want choice, scenery and a comprehensive rule list, this is a perfect addition to your Black Library.
