Why Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Is The Best Assassin's Creed

7. The Story

By the time Black Flag rolled around in 2013, the Assassin's Creed franchise was on a bit of a storyline slump. Brotherhood's was solid enough but nowhere near the level of ACs 1 and 2, Revelations was overly convoluted and complicated, whilst III was just confused.

Black Flag, on the other hand, feels like a real return to form. It obviously benefits from the improved characters, innovative gameplay and fresh new world, but Black Flag's storyline genuinely is one of the most original and layered in the series to date. It's funny and lighthearted, charming and action-packed, and far more emotional than it honestly had any right to be.

The overall theme of the story is understanding the destiny and direction each person has in their lives, and how those around a person can lead to a different path. It's a touching and clever message to use, matching the pirate theme and characters nicely, and is actually easy enough for players to follow on with.

Stacked full of shocks and surprises, Black Flag does a great job in switching it up between Edward's pirate life and his introduction into the world of the Brotherhood.
