Why Insomniac's Spider-Man Is Short Of Amazing
2. Miles And MJ Are Horrible To Play As
During the build-up to its highly anticipated release, Insomniac gushed about the game’s missions where you play as a boyscout who’s so perfect he could try out for Jesus, and an angsty reporter who’s so clever and brave she may as well dye her hair blonde and call herself Gwen Stacy.
While both Miles and MJ are likeable and charming via their many cutscenes and phone calls, their ‘immersive’ missions are intolerable drags, putting a stop to the game’s fun.
Designed as linear stealth missions that even Solid Snake would find tedious, the sequences don’t feel anywhere near as tense as the developers intended. AI is blind, there are always boxes in the way that lead to you being killed, and there’s zero difference between the way Miles and MJ control.
Aside from forcing you to be a nosy pest so you can witness first-hand who is going to be the sequel’s main baddie, all the MJ and Miles missions are entirely pointless. What they did 15-30 minutes earlier to require rescuing by Spider-Man rarely matters, and the game could have just shown what happened through more excellent, well made cutscenes.
