Arguably the most controversial match in WWF history, the Montreal Screwjob informally ushered in the Attitude Era. The traditionalist Bret Hart was coming up against the charismatic Shawn Michaels, who had changed his character heavily to coincide with the new style of the WWF. The match was actually rather good, which is often forgotten due to the ending. As most are aware Michaels locked in Harts famous Sharpshooter and McMahon rang for the bell. HBK was awarded the belt and chaos ensued as the Hitman spat at Vince. To this day the true details of that eventful night are not fully in the public knowledge because of the various stories. This match was not also important because of the outcome but because it planted the seeds for the Mr McMahon character, who would feud with Steve Austin.
