WWE 2K Battlegrounds Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs
3. The Campaign Is Functional
Story mode begins with Paul Heyman pitching a new brand to Vince McMahon, saying he wants to gather newcomers from around the world and have them compete in their native environments. He appoints Steve Austin as a talent scout and recruiter and it's with 'Stone Cold' that your journey starts, as the game's first protagonist, Bolo Reynolds, literally bumps into the legend while cycling in New York City, leading to his recruitment.
Seconds later and young Bolo is fighting Baron Corbin in a subway tunnel. Later, Reynolds is replaced with all kinds of wacky characters, including a Floridian alligator wrestler.
Though it falls to repetition at times, the campaign works. Its story is beautifully presented through a series of comic book panels and while occasionally cheesy, it is mostly solid, serving as a functional bridge from point A to point B. Players go from match to match, unlocking new components along the way, and while it's not something that'll hook you for hours on end, it's fun enough to hook you for a while.
