WWE 2K18: 7 Biggest Disappointments
2. The Lack Of A WWE Superstar Story Mode
The continued expansion of MyCareer is appreciated, 2K, but is it too much to ask that we get to play a Story Mode as the superstars we see every week on television? That was once the beauty of WWE video games. In SmackDown: Shut Your Mouth, it was even possible to pick a lower-card name like Raven and start out on Heat. The entire process felt like a journey.
Though that same journey is a major part of MyCareer in 2K17, it's viewed through the eyes of your own creation. There's no chance to live vicariously through the week-to-week story of a genuine WWE performer, and its an ommision that must make a comeback in WWE video games. Universe Mode doesn't count, because it's an endless grind of matches more than a cohesive story.
Without a classic Career Mode driven by the characters we know and love, MyCareer is left feeling like a secondary feature elevated to top dog status because 2K can't be bothered to do anything else. There's no reason why the developers can't work with WWE and follow the stories of the previous year on Raw and SmackDown to create a more vibrant experience.
