WWE 2K23: 8 Gameplay Details You Need To Know

'The Match Beyond' has been a desired match type for the past few years since its 2017 NXT debut. It was hoped that with the extended break between October 2019's WWE 2K20 and March 2022's WWE 2K22, it could be included but ultimately, it was a no-go.

Speaking to Wrestle Buddies, Lynell Jinks explained the process behind incorporating WarGames, which actually began with rebuilding the base engine in WWE 2K22. To start from scratch, the team had to think ahead about what they'd want to include in the future. Surprisingly, it was the revamped Backstage Brawl in WWE 2K22 that laid the foundations for WarGames once the developers realised they had more leeway than first thought with the game's surroundings.

Bryan Williams, WWE 2K23's Associate Gameplay Producer, described the match as "the most ambitious match type that has ever been in this franchise", explaining some of the aspects that make WarGames stand out (h/t Fightful):-

"You can, if a Superstar known for their springboards, being able to springboard from one ring to the next. It’s chaotic, frenetic, there are weapons. One of the cool things you can do is, as new entrants come into the match, they can take a pause and before they get in, they can go under the ring apron, pull out a weapon, object, tables, chairs, kendo stick, stop sign, baseball bat, and introduce all these things into this environment. Being able to climb and fight on top of the cage, doing dive attacks off of the cage and into either one of the rings."

It has been confirmed that there will be both three vs. three and four vs. four variations of WarGames in WWE 2K23, as well as the option to play as male and female characters. Although the match can be played online, it will, unfortunately, remain unplayable in MyGM.

There's no word on an option to have William Regal announce the match beforehand either - but will it really be WarGames without him?
