Xbox Game Pass: 10 Best Horror Games You Must Play

3. Alan Wake

A tour de force of atmosphere, Alan Wake is one of the best games Remedy has ever made—and with their back catalogue, that’s saying something.

Exploring the various areas of Bright Falls while listening to Wake's Stephen King inspired voiceover invokes a horror vibe that is unique to the game.

Remedy are never afraid to take whatever weird subject material they have based their game on seriously, and Alan Wake’s commitment to making the small town of Bright Falls weirder and more horror based over time keeps in line with this ideology. Wake’s best friend and agent, Barry Wheeler, is on hand to provide the role of Funny Best Friend, and he does a good job at providing levity to Wake’s pondering prose.

Enemies are typically fought by using a flashlight to lower their defence, and then unloading bullets into them. It’s not too difficult, even on the harder difficulties. The hardest part is keeping track of your ammo, and annoyingly, resources are taken from you after each chapter of the game. A weird inclusion, but only a slight downside to this brilliant game.

Alan Wake still holds up today, despite being originally released in 2010 for the Xbox 360. If you've ever enjoyed a Stephen King book or adaptation, you need to play Alan Wake.
