Xbox Game Pass: 10 Best Horror Games You Must Play

David Lynch mixed with a Saturday morning cartoon, Control cements Remedy as the king of eerie atmospheres.

You play as Jesse Faden, a reluctant guest of The Oldest House, a mysterious compound occupied by the American government, which takes the general architectural design from such government buildings. Jesse is searching for her brother, Dylan, who she hasn’t seen since a mysterious incident occured when they were children.

The game is a smorgasbord of horror sci-fi, offering constant background whispering, neo-noir phone calls, giant cosmic horror bosses, mad scientists, and a killer fridge--to name a few. All of this, and much more, occurs as you hone Jesse’s abilities, which include levitation, mind control, and telekinesis. The game is as weird as it is good, and with its vertical level design opening up halfway through, an absolute blast to experience.

Jesse’s inner dialogue lets us get to know her better, and she turns out to be a delightful goofball at times. She finds the goings on at The Oldest House as weird as us, and offers funny or insightful commentary when needed.

The game’s atmosphere is hard to put into words, but Jesse sums it up best in response to a particularly memorable action sequence; “That was awesome”.
