Xbox Game Pass: 10 Must-Plays You Should Try
6. A Plague Tale: Innocence
Not for
the faint of heart, A Plague Tale is a heavily character-focused story
game, following the lives of two recently orphaned siblings in 14th
Century France. Yes, we do see the brutal murder of their family (and, perhaps even more cruelly, pet dog), that led them to this predicament.
There is a refreshing emphasis on stealth, with each enemy- understandably, given the age and strength of the adolescent protagonists Amicia and Hugo- proving a challenge, and confronting groups being a near-suicidal idea.
Luckily, there are environmental assets sometimes on hand to indirectly assist; smash a guard's lantern, for instance, and they will be viciously eaten alive by a swarm of angry rats. It's a far cry from Asobo's own Zoo Tycoon.
While horror might not be everyone's cup of tea, A Plague Tale is certainly worth picking up on merit of the storyline and its exploration of family and relationships, in a similar way to how The Last of Us was essential playing whether or not you could bear zombies.
In the case of A Plague Tale, it's easy to become heavily invested in the brother and sister; they're no Joel and Ellie, but they're still pretty damn compelling.
