Xbox Game Pass: 12 Massively Underrated Games You Must Play
11. Comix Zone
This hyper-stylized action game dropped in 1995 with a way-ahead-the-curve approach and stunning graphics, yet it released around the time the Sega Mega Drive’s lifecycle was winding down, with nary an audience to appreciate this killer title. Thankfully, Sega has recognised this and pumped the game out as a retro release on several modern platforms.
The plot has a comic artist blessed with the moniker Sketch Turner, pulled into his own comic world by an evil entity. Turner is then forced to fight his way through to victory panel-by-panel, beat-down to beat-down.
Gloriously 90s in every aspect - we can tell the main character is ‘edgy’ from his shades and ponytail combo - the game features impressive animations and a visual sheen that still stands up handsomely in the retro appeal.
The true showpiece though is the mechanic of having the game itself work as a full-blown animated comic. The player must defeat or puzzle each panel, before moving to the next one either vertically or horizontally. Enemies are drawn onto the page, and characters communicate through speech bubbles. It’s a great concept and one that strangely has never been repeated by other games since.
Be aware though, this old-school game can be brutally hard, but with only five levels to punch through, it's a feasible challenge at a fair length, and a fine chance to discover an unsung cult classic.
