9. Kameo: Elements Of Power
With Rare having returned to large-scale Microsoft exclusives with Sea Of Thieves, now is a good time to look back at one of their vastly overlooked titles from yesteryear.
Kameo was an earlier attempt by Rare at creating a large-scale franchise for the Xbox brand, but it failed and soon they were regulated to being the ‘Kinect Guys’.
This colourful and ambitious Xbox 360 launch title got ignored due to changing tastes from gamers; cartoony 3D adventure was out, brown-and-grey alien shooters were in. Now in retrospect, we can discover a surprisingly layered twist on a familiar formula.
Playing as an Elf Princess defending her kingdom from nasty goblin invaders, your heroine is able to take on a handful of forms with varied traits - a brute force Yeti, a swift-fisted Flower, a platforming Gorilla - that gives the gameplay a sense of variety and unique style of problem-solving.
The game gets off to an awkward start with its opening level, but once your past it, you’ll discover a fully enjoyable adventure game - and an overlooked piece of Rare’s Xbox history.
Even if animations and models look quite primitive today, its still got enough pizzazz and creativity to make up for it, with a fantasy storybook aesthetic that's still quite intoxicating.
