Xbox Game Pass: 12 Massively Underrated Games You Must Play
8. Iron Brigade
Released at a time when tower defence games and third-person shooters were all the craze, this smash-up of both genres might be Double Fine Production’s most mainstream product. Still, that doesn’t prevent it from being uniquely distinct, as well as carrying the same underdog cult pedigree as with most of their efforts.
With a bizarre premise featuring an alternative version of the WW1 that has the good guys rocking trenches that are basically customisable mech-warriors, and the bad guys manipulating early TV technology to create lizard-like adversaries.
If that sounds obtuse; it’s not. It basically boils down to an onslaught of enemies coming at the gamer, while you must defend the area with your high-powered ‘trench’ and various turrets placements.
Also being a Double Fine production, there’s plenty of personality at play, with a unique art style, an original story and spades of witty dialogue too - a welcome change for a genre type usually devoid of flavour.
It makes for exciting gaming as you dole out heaps of satisfying firepower whilst in parallel having to strategically outmanoeuvre those nasty creatures. It's even more fun in co-op, with up to three other players able to join as well.
Even though this is the studio's most accessible game, in no way is the quality compromised because of this - give it a shot for a unique action fix.
