Xbox Series X: 4 Ups & 4 Downs After 4 Months
1. You Still Don't Need It
Even Microsoft are weirdly acknowledging the fact you don't "need" an Xbox Series X. In various interviews approaching and since launch, Xbox head Phil Spencer has championed the "Xbox ecosystem" more than any specific console sales numbers.
He's formerly said the brand's main competition is more Amazon and Google than Sony and Nintendo, and it speaks to a wider mentality of Xbox being the brand in video game playing - like Netflix for movies - rather than a medium-specific battle for superiority.
Microsoft are thinking big with Xbox, and they actively don't care which version of the system you buy. Everything IS best on Series X, the same way a £1000 smartphone has faster refresh rates and smoother app transitions, but the time for exclusives and traditional reasons to invest will come later.
Right now, the Game Pass, all-financial options welcome, "Just look at all these games"-style approach is working wonders. The future should bring new Bethesda IPs, first-party exclusives and titles that take full advantage of the console, but that won't be for at least another year.
For now, the Xbox Series X gives you everything and nothing to play, simultaneously.
