Who knows whether Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot's bold prediction about the next console generation being the last holds true, but the man's certainly got one thing right - streaming technology is going to get considerably more attention than before in the years to come.

Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer delivered the briefest of teasers about where the Xbox brand is headed next, once the One X sees out the remainder of its lifetime, chief among them being a reference to making streaming and cloud-based gameplay possible not just on consoles, but any device powerful enough to play games on.

Our cloud engineers are building a game streaming network to unlock console gaming on any device.

What potential experiences this hypothetical technology will pave the way for is anyone's guess, but, assuming it can meet the latest in a long line of proposed launch dates, Crackdown 3's cloud-based destruction tech demoed oh so long ago could be but a small glimpse at the sorts of new and innovative scenarios made possible.

There's, of course, the elephant in the room to address: that every past attempt to provide a live game streaming service has ultimately failed due to unreliability and latency issues, but Microsoft's got two years to make headway in that department.
