Yakuza: Why Everybody Loves Goro Majima
5. He Doesn't Take Things Too Seriously
If Goro Majima wants to wear a snakeskin blazer, no shirt, leather trousers and leather gloves as a day to day outfit, then that's what he'll do. Life's too short to take everything so seriously, especially for a Yakuza like Majima. His couldn't care less attitude is popular with fans and makes for a good break away character from all the seriousness of some of the other characters in the game.
From challenging Kiryu to a fight while dressed as a hostess, casually appearing from inside a public rubbish bin and that cutscene from club Asia, it’s pretty clear that Majima really doesn't take anything too seriously. These light hearted moments really make this game series as wonderful as it is. They also add to Majima's character and make him more than the standard archetypal rival.
Majima's ability to have fun juxtaposed with the more serious parts of the game makes him a character the fans love to see because they know they're in for a laugh. Generally it's also a pretty good trait to have in real life which is another reason people connect with Majima. He shows us certain qualities we'd like to see in ourselves but probably don't have the means to achieve. At the very least there'd be some pretty severe consequences if players did half the weird things Majima does, but this just makes him even more likeable.
