You Were All Wrong About Sonic: Unleashed
Restoring Some Pride
Ultimately, Sega and Sonic fans owe more than they'd like to admit to Sonic Unleashed. Dragging the franchise through the mire that had been the mid-2000s era of Sonic games, it was the one that proved that the developers could still produce a game that took players' breath away, which has always been the reaction Sonic team have built their legacy off.
There's an awful lot to love about Sonic Unleashed. The hub worlds all have their own character and identity, the visuals look great for a game over a decade old now, Sonic's great now that he's fully under the spotlight, and the quaint relationship he builds with Chip and the other characters made for a great tonal shift from previous games in the series.
Rooftop Run got a remastering for Sonic Generations, but the likes of Apotos, Adabat and Chu-Nan's daytime stages are all well worth a playthrough of the game alone and it's really not a stretch calling these aspects of the game the best Sonic the Hedgehog has ever felt in the modern era.
Fans are always going to be divided over their favourite blue hedgehog turning into an elastic Werehog, and if that wasn't their thing back in 2008 it probably isn't going to be now, but the feature hardly makes the game unplayable like certain other features in other Sonic games, and it certainly isn't a big enough issue to take away from all the things Unleashed absolutely nails.
