Zelda: Link's Awakening Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. The Photographer Is Gone

Perhaps this is me feeling entitled, perhaps it's my nostalgia for the thrills of borrowing my friend's old game boy printer, but after 10 hours of playtime and slowly coming to the realisation that the old Photographer from Link's Awakening DX was not present in the 2019 remake, I'm left in sad disbelief.

Clearly a gimmick put into the game purely to sell more Game Boy cameras, at various points in the game's story, Link could trigger a cutscene in which the mousey photographer would snap an adorable picture of him and whatever activities he was getting up to at the time. The photographs would be stored in an album that could be printed onto a little sticker through the Game Boy Printer peripheral.

With the Switch's innate ability to screenshot anything and everything these days and share it instantly to social medias, having a clear set-up encouraging you to press the screenshot button seems like a no-brainer. Perhaps Nintendo felt that it was a little archaic, and they have replaced it with Dampé's dungeon creator instead, but damn was it hilarious seeing the snaps come out, with Link's shifty eyes as he stole from the shopkeeper, or his adorable peace fingers as he poses in front of the castle.

Shame.
