Very few movies have enjoyed or benefitted from unique marketing campaigns quite as well as The Blair Witch Project. Using the internet's infancy to extreme success, the filmmakers had general audiences genuinely unsure whether this was a true story, and so they flocked to see it for themselves.

Of course, the film did incredibly well, not only at the box office but as a cultural staple of the horror genre. The found footage style inspired countless further efforts, arguably the biggest being the likes of Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. Ironically, The Blair Witch Project's own actual sequel was nowhere near the top of this particular list.

Moving away from the found footage style and the potential true story aspect, since the latter was never going to work twice, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 released just one year after the original. It was panned by critics and audiences alike, failed miserably at the box office, and was forgotten very quickly.

Even the 2016 sequel, Blair Witch, an utterly forgettable picture in itself, ignored the events of Book of Shadows entirely. This gives The Blair Witch Project not one, but two sequels, both terrible and quickly forgotten.
