10 Horror Movies That Switch The Main Character Halfway

A Band Apart

Quentin Tarantino's grindhouse feature opens with our "protagonist" Julia hanging out at a bar with her gal-pals. While they catch up, professional driver Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) manages to worm his way into the ladies' conversation.

Because a good 40 minutes is spent fleshing out this lot, there's little reason to doubt they are the main ensemble.

However, anyone with that mindset is in for a rude awakening. When the bar closes, Mike agrees to give a lift to Julia's friend, Pam. Once he splits her skull in half, the deranged daredevil sets his sights on the rest of the group. After catching up with Julia's car, Mike rams his vehicle into hers, eviscerating the women in glorious fashion. In that moment, every central character is dead, save for the villain.

And yet, the movie still has over an hour to kill. Death Proof suddenly cuts to a year later, with Stuntman Mike hunting another quartet of females. This assemblage fairs far better than Mike's previous victims, killing the maniacal stuntman during the picture's climax.

Even though Tarantino is known for his disjointed stories, Death Proof's jumbled narrative threw everyone for a loop.
