10 Horror Movies That Switch The Main Character Halfway

7. Identity

Even after 20 years, Identity's ingenious bait-and-switch has lost none of its power. The story centres around Ed Dakota (John Cusack) and nine other strangers stuck in an isolated motel during a storm. When people start dying, the group realise there is a killer among them.

To add to the confusion, the film keeps cutting to a psychiatrist called Malick speaking to the authorities about convicted serial killer, Malcolm Rivers. On the first watch, viewers haven't a clue how this subplot is connected to the overall story. When Malick brings out Malcolm later on, viewers are left scratching their head, since he doesn't resemble any of the characters from the motel.

When Dakota seemingly blacks out, he finds himself in the presence of Malick and the police. To his horror, Dakota discovers he and everyone else in the motel is a figment of Malcolm's imagination. Due to his troubled childhood, Malcolm's personality split into fragments, one of which happens to have murderous tendencies.

Although viewers speculated on what role Malcolm would play when he was introduced, nobody was expecting him to be the secret main character.
