You know a horror franchise is out of ideas when it sends the action to space; for example, Jason X or Leprechaun 4: In Space. In fairness to Critters, given the series revolves around the murderous alien Krites race, it has a little more of an excuse to head to the stars than certain other franchises.

That's not to say that Critters 4 is a particularly great movie, of course, and this is a film which very much turned off a good chunk of those who'd stuck with the series up until this point. How did it do that? Why, by revealing that one of the series' greatest heroes was in fact now a corrupt, sinister villain.

That hero would be Ug, an alien bounty hunter who'd been key to overcoming the Krites in the first two movies, and who'd have a brief cameo at the end of Critters 3. With Critters 4 picking up at the precise moments its predecessor ended, we find Charlie McFadden - town drunk-turned-Krite hunter - reminded that he can't kill the final two remaining Krite eggs, for it goes against intergalactic rules to wipe out a species.

From there, Charlie is frozen in time and awakens on a spaceship in the year 2045, where Councilor Tetra of the nefarious TerraCor is desperate to get his hand on the remaining Krites. When Charlie and his newfound future pals finally come face-to-face with Tetra, it's revealed that this rogue is indeed a turned-to-the-dark-side Ug.

Not cool, man. So, so not cool.
