Following the success of Talk To Me, Shelby Oaks, and Iron Lung, the past few years have seen a trend of YouTubers make the leap into horror cinema. The next to do so is Kane Parsons, whose unsettling analogue horror web series Backrooms is getting a big screen adaptation in May 2026 from A24.

Directed by Parsons and written by Will Soodik, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, a store owner who disappears after uncovering an impossible space behind a wall in his business' basement. It's then up to his therapist (Sentimental Value's Renate Reinsve) to go looking for him.

Beginning life as a surreal photograph of empty yellow rooms taken in 2011, the concept of the Backrooms began doing the rounds on the internet as a Creepypasta in 2019, a concept Parsons further popularised with his series of found footage short films. By emphasising the uncanniness of the setting, the filmmaker's vision of liminal horror became a worldwide sensation.

From its trailer, the upcoming adaptation looks to be embracing the same flavour of nightmarish imagery that made the Backrooms so eerily unnerving. Although this feature is more conventionally cinematic, viewers can still expect to see chilling found footage sequences.
