Eli Roth is certainly no stranger to controversy. The Green Inferno may be one of his most infamous projects, and not for the right reasons, but eight years before that 2013 cannibal movie came Hostel, something seemingly inspired by the video nasty era.

The story of Hostel, and of Hostel: Part II, for that matter, since there was very little between them in terms of storytelling, revolved around a group of travelers finding themselves trapped and tortured in Eastern Europe.

The depiction of countries like Slovakia and the Czech Republic outraged many, understandably so, and these places were reduced to crime-ridden cities where you were likely to get kidnapped around the next street corner. Even without such controversies, the films proved hard to watch, even for those who enjoy such torturous scenarios, with one scene in the 2005 first movie standing out in particular.

While tied to a chair, Kana (Jennifer Lim) had a blow torch taken to her eye to the point that it had melted and hung from her face, leading to it being snipped off later. It was truly disgusting and way past the line, even for a movie whose entire point of existence was gratuitous and exaggerated torture.
