10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 2000s

4. How The West Was Won - Led Zeppelin

About six years after a collection of Led Zeppelin performances for the BBC were released as a live album, the iconic band put out another set of concert performances in 2003.

Taken from two concerts two nights apart in 1972, the year when Led Zep were considered to be at the peak of their powers, How the West Was Won was a three-disc package and a dream come true for fans of the band young and old, as it showcased the godfathers of hard rock at a time when they ruled the world.

From the opening salvo of Immigrant Song to a flawless performance of Stairway to Heaven to a 25 minute mash-up of Dazed and Confused, Walter's Walk, and The Crunge, How the West Was Won has everything you could possibly want in a live album, and it sounds as crisp and clear as any of their studio recordings.

All this good stuff sent the record to number one in June of 2003, sandwiched between Staind's 14 Shades of Grey and Metallica's St. Anger. Clearly, the summer of '03 belonged to the metalheads.
