10 Dumbest Music Videos Ever Made
9. Mr. Roboto - Styx
Most bands coming out of the '70s had a bit of a rough period trying to transition into the MTV era. I mean, when you didn't have to rely on your looks and made your living off of delivering your magic to the people directly, what happened when you actually had to stand in front of the camera? As much as this kind of invention could have backfired, Styx were the kings of the world with Mr. Roboto...for a couple of minutes.
When put up against the first amateur videos in MTV history, this is ambitious as all hell, trying to encapsulate the dystopian atmosphere that Dennis DeYoung had envisioned for his album Kilroy Was Here. As time has gone on though, what was once daring and conceptual has become one of the cheesiest things ever made. Compared to the usual hardened songs in the Styx catalog like Renegade, seeing DeYoung being picked apart by robots is almost too dopey to take seriously, as he hams it up for the camera at every turn.
One especially hilarious moment comes in the bridge, where he comes up to one of the androids and delivers one of the most "epic" screams that someone like Dennis DeYoung can muster. Though rock and roll has always been meant to be larger than life, treating it like it's Shakespeare is just a little too on the nose.
