10 Greatest Hair Metal Songs

7. You Give Love A Bad Name - Bon Jovi

Just like the Sisters though, Bon Jovi were not in the best geographic location to hit it big. It's just common sense that if you want to succeed at hair metal, you're going to need to find your way out to California at some point. When you have the chops like these Jersey boys did, sometimes the spotlight will come to you.

Outside of the amazing chorus of this song, You Give Love a Bad Name was proof that these rough and tumble fellas from Bon Jovi could really play, even using a few cues from major songwriters in the game like Desmond Child. Compared to the usual flashy playing, Richie Sambora manages to serve the song perfectly, never overplaying and sprinkling just the right amount of shred into the mix that makes you want to rewind the solo over and over again.

It's almost crazier when you realize that this wasn't even supposed to be a Bon Jovi hit. Before they had even considered it for themselves, the boys and Desmond Child were originally thinking about giving this song away to become a hit for Loverboy. Given that they had the breakup anthem to end all breakup anthems on their hands, it's probably good that they decided to keep this one hanging around.
