10 Hated Rock Bands With One Amazing Album
1. Continuum - John Mayer
In the grand scheme of '00s rock, John Mayer is pretty much the reason why guitar players sometimes get a bad reputation. As much as he might seem like a decent player whenever he has a six string in his hand, some of the more douchey behavior that he gets into from time to time has had people rolling their eyes more often than they are enjoying his music. Somewhere in between the tabloid stories and questionable decisions though, we got a pop masterpiece with Continuum.
With this one record, John actually has a great command of melody and taste, with a touch on the guitar that lives up to his reputation of being a guitar hero. The backing band on this record is also immaculate, with Pino Palladino on bass and Steve Jordan on the drums anchoring everything down most of the time.
There are even some lyrics here that aren't half bad by John's standards either, especially on something like Belief where he talks about the ongoing Iraq War or the absolute heartache that comes with the song Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. You can say what you want to about his antics outside of music, but anyone who can cover someone like Jimi Hendrix and not embarrass themselves deserves some amount of respect in the rock community.
