10 Modern Rock Bands You Need To Listen To
9. Algiers
In 2021, the concept of any band sticking to one genre is almost foolish on the part of the listener. I mean, even with the pop sphere, someone like Billie Eilish is practically incomparable in genre to anything else, with her weird mixes of pop, horrorcore, and traces of singer songwriter in the mix to taste. So it's only a matter of time before we see the rock world following suit with Algiers.
Bursting out of the rock scene with their last three records, there's practically nothing off the table in terms of what genre these guys want to tackle. Led by Franklin James Fisher, the entire sound of this band seems to be based around the more emotionally potent forms of rock, from the old Delta blues to the dark malaise of post punk to even the subtle traces of something like industrial rock.
Then again, it sometimes helps when you have some impressive musicians in your corner, and having Matt Tong from Bloc Party is definitel the best element on these songs, as he knows just when to scale things back and then fly off the rails when the song calls for it. While there may be some people who find this kind of music a smooch too artsy for their ears, there's nothing wrong with a bit of intellectualism when the songs hit this hard.
