10 Most Hated Musicians Of All Time
4. John Mayer
Reason: All in the aesthetic
There's probably a whole subsect of guitar players still trying to decipher how to play John Mayer licks. For all intents and purposes, Mayer is one of the few real virtuosos in the rock scene who deserve to be remembered as one of the most tasteful players of his generation. On the other hand, there's the one other side to John that no one really likes to relive.
Across his discography, Mayer has gotten a bit of a reputation as one of the more glaring jerks in his own style. From the way his sleepy ballads play out to the questionable lyrics laced throughout his career, a lot of people have never been able to latch onto his more sophomoric approach to writing songs. Though John has definitely grown both as a player and a writer since his inception, there's still a lot of snideness in his delivery that reeks of the frat bro who used to use his guitar as a means to hit on girls.
However, the licks are still enough to keep the more musically savvy listeners coming back for more, even earning Mayer a spot playing in the Grateful Dead for a while. He may be able to play like a madman, but can you please just keep this man away from the sleepier side of the adult alternative station.
