10 Most Underrated Foo Fighters Songs
7. Generator - There Is Nothing Left To Lose
Across their career, the Foos haven't really been ones for subtlety all that often. If you were to throw on their greatest hits, the killer hooks usually smack you in the face right from the get go instead of going for the traditional slow burn approach. By the time they reached There is Nothing Left to Lose though, the band definitely had reason to mellow out.
After losing original drummer William Goldsmith before the Colour and the Shape came out and going through two separate guitarists, this entire record has a much more laid back vibe than the past few records, with Generator being the ultimate example. Though this is nowhere near a ballad by any stretch, there's a much more mellow attitude on this cut, with Dave making amazing use of the talk box. As much as people might get flashbacks to Bon Jovi though, this is the perfect kind of use of the robot voice, choosing to add to the song rather than grandstand.
This is also where Dave starts to come into his own as a lyricist, comparing his infatuation with this girl to a generator, making his heart actually pump effectively. It may have just been the crisp Virginia air that made this record possible, but if this is what happens when the Foos relax, maybe they should do it more often.
