10 Most Underrated Paul McCartney Songs
1. Soily - Wings Over America
When it comes to rock and roll, there's no better showcase than the live album. Whereas a lot of live releases are considered throwaways now, it's golden age in the '70s often included some of the best material any band had to offer, be it Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, or even KISS. However, Wings Over America gave us one of the greatest rockers McCartney ever made in Soily.
Coming right at the tail end of the record, this song is one of the most raucous compositions that Paul had ever attempted in his Wings years, as he pulls out his Little Richard-esque screams and a growling bass performance. From the tempo to the rapid fire delivery, Macca hadn't sounded this raw and aggressive since his work on Helter Skelter back in his Beatles years. Compared to the more metallic acts arriving on the scene like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, this song is almost punk in its delivery, almost as if Paul is trying to prove that he can write more than silly love songs.
It's also a testament to this performance that Soily never got a proper studio recording, instead remaining a relic on their live album and a staple of the Wings tour. Even with a plethora of different albums to choose from, this one little track stands as the greatest McCartney rocker that most fairweather fans have never heard of.
