7. Torches - Foster the People
How do you even begin to describe Foster the People? They are one of those indie bands that is infamous for having 'the' in the middle of their name (along with Portugal. The Man, Minus the Bear, and Young the Giant). It is hard to classify Foster the People as one specific genre of music. They fit the whole experimental, melodic, dance-infused pop style with a whole lot of other stuff mixed in. But they are ridiculously talented. There are only three of them, which makes the massive sound so much more impressive when you watch them perform. Mark Foster has an eery voice, which sounds auto-tuned even when he's performing live. He plays the piano and synth like it's his job (because, well, it is), and he sings every song with obvious passion. Cubbie Fink, the bassist, always lays down a badass bassline and adds beautiful vocal harmonies, while Mark Pontius - the drummer - rocks the hell out to every song with incredible beats and excellent rhythms. Overall, Foster the People are an extremely well-put-together band that has risen up progressively through the ranks and proven themselves to be suitable competition for the other synth-pop bands in the industry.
