10 Rare Muse Songs You've Probably Never Heard

5. Micro Cuts - Origin Of Symmetry

Most Muse fans first got a taste of what they could really do on Origin of Symmetry. After feeling around to get their sonic identity on Showbiz, the strength of tracks like New Born and Bliss brought their space rock tinged sound to the masses for the first time. Though there were plenty of hits off of the record, the real power behind these guys came in the form of Micro Cuts.

Up until this point, people already knew that Matt Bellamy had a powerful voice. However, on this song, he really pushes his singing style to the very limit, with almost the entire song being done in falsetto. While Bellamy had been used to this style before, the chorus is where things get really straining, as he sounds like a cross between Freddie Mercury in his prime and a wild theremin going out of control.

That's before you even get to the lyrics, as he goes on about a force outside of his control trying to bend him to do their bidding. Once you put it into perspective, it's almost like the falsetto here is Bellamy screaming his agony over being manipulated like this. Even though the title implies the miniscule nature of these cuts, the music behind it leaves a much more gaping wound after you're finished.
